Understanding German Tax Classes (Steuerklassen)

Germany has 6 tax classes that determine how much income tax is withheld from your salary. Your tax class depends on your marital status, family situation, and employment.

1

Tax Class 1 — Single

For unmarried, widowed (after the transition year), divorced, or permanently separated employees without children. This is the default class for most single workers in Germany.

Best for:Single employees with one job and no children
2

Tax Class 2 — Single Parent

For single parents who live alone with at least one child and receive child benefits (Kindergeld). Provides an additional tax relief (Alleinerziehendenentlastung) of €4,260/year plus €240 for each additional child.

Best for:Single parents raising children alone
3

Tax Class 3 — Married (Higher Earner)

For married couples or registered civil partners where one spouse earns significantly more than the other. The higher earner uses Class 3 (lowest tax) while the other spouse must take Class 5. Also applies to widowed persons in the first year after the spouse's death.

Best for:Married couples where one earns significantly more (60/40 split or greater)
4

Tax Class 4 — Married (Equal Earners)

The default for married couples and registered partnerships. Both spouses pay the same tax rate as if they were single. Best when both partners earn similar amounts. Couples can also opt for Class 4 with a 'factor' (Faktorverfahren) for more accurate withholding.

Best for:Married couples with similar incomes
5

Tax Class 5 — Married (Lower Earner)

The counterpart to Class 3. If one spouse takes Class 3, the other automatically gets Class 5, which has the highest tax withholding. The combination 3/5 makes sense only when there's a big income difference between partners.

Best for:Lower-earning spouse in a 3/5 combination
6

Tax Class 6 — Second Job

For employees with a second or additional job. Applied to any income beyond your primary employment (which uses your normal tax class 1-5). Has the highest tax rate with no tax-free allowance, because allowances already apply to your main job.

Best for:Employees with multiple jobs (second job only)

💡 Can I change my tax class?

Yes! Married couples can switch between 3/5, 4/4, and 4/4 with factor combinations once per year (or after major life events like marriage, divorce, or birth of a child) at their local Finanzamt or online via ELSTER. The change applies to future paychecks.

ℹ️ Important note

The tax class only affects monthly withholding, not your total yearly tax. Any over- or under-payment is reconciled when you file your annual tax return (Einkommensteuererklärung). The total tax owed for the year is the same regardless of class combination chosen.
