IELTS vs TOEFL vs Duolingo for German Universities: Which One Actually Works

Duolingo is a fraction of the price and takes an hour — but German admission and the German visa are two separate gates, and they do not always accept the same certificate. How to choose without losing a semester.

The German Student Tax Return: How the Verlustvortrag Turns Study Costs Into Thousands Later

Most students never file, assuming they owe nothing so there is nothing to claim. For master's students that assumption is expensive: study costs can be banked as losses and cut the tax bill on your first real salary.

The Deutschlandticket and Semester Ticket: What Students Pay and What It Covers in 2026

€37.80 a month gets students unlimited local and regional transport across all of Germany — but not the fast trains. What the semester ticket includes, why it is compulsory, and how it changes where you can afford to live.

What German Cities Actually Cost a Student: Munich, Berlin, Leipzig and the Rest Compared

The same €992 blocked-account allowance is comfortable in Leipzig and genuinely short in Munich. Rent by city, what it does to your monthly budget, and how to weigh cost against the local job market.

Werkstudent Jobs in Germany: The 20-Hour Rule, the Insurance Privilege and Your Visa Limit

A Werkstudent contract exempts you from most social insurance and pays well above a Minijob — but two separate rule sets apply at once, and breaching either is expensive. The 2026 hours, thresholds and pay explained.

Opening a German Bank Account as a Student: Sperrkonto, Girokonto and the Order to Do Them In

You need two different accounts at two different times, and confusing them is why students land in Germany with €11,904 they cannot spend. Blocked account, current account, and how to get a working IBAN before your Anmeldung comes through.

FAQ

Questions every future student asks

Yes! Most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for bachelor and master programs — even for international students. You only pay a semester contribution of €150-350 which often includes public transport.

Not necessarily. There are over 2,000 English-taught programs, especially at master level. For German-taught programs you typically need B2/C1 (TestDaF or DSH). Basic German still helps enormously with daily life and part-time jobs.

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is required for your student visa. You need to prove €11,904 per year (€992/month) in a blocked account. This ensures you can support yourself financially during your studies.

On average, students need €850-1,200 per month depending on the city. This includes rent (€300-500), food (€200-250), health insurance (€110), transport (€50-80), and other expenses.

Yes. Searching 20,000+ programs, the GPA converter, the salary calculator and all guides are completely free — no account needed. Only the AI document tools (CV, motivation letter, cover letter) use one-time credit packs starting at €2.99. No subscription, credits never expire.

For the winter semester (October start) most programs close on July 15; for the summer semester (April start) on January 15. Many programs — and uni-assist processing — need documents weeks earlier, so start your application 3-4 months before the deadline.
